Palais Lascaris
This Genoese-style baroque palace was built in the middle of
the 17th century for the Lascaris de Vintimille (a small
Italian town near Nice); it was their family home until
1802. Tucked away in a narrow street in the city's historic
core, the richly coloured and decorated façade of
this palace is flanked by old red and ochre buildings so
typical of Nice's old quarter. The interior is sumptuous
baroque with vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes and
huge sweeping staircases. There is twelfth-century
furniture, some Flemish tapestries and on the ground floor a
restored pharmacy dating from 1738, complete with many of
the original Delftware accessories. Free admission. An
intensive restoration undertaken by the city of Nice in 1946
brought back its original beauty, and the palace is now
classified a historic monument. The most elaborate floor is
the étage noble, retaining many of its 18th-century
panels and plaster embellishments.
